* I made this post on reddit at 2am PDT on 2026-04-02 in the r/atheist section. It was promptly removed by the moderators. Whatever the reason, that atheist section there is a joke. It's likely controlled by Christians. So I'm posting here because I simply cannot do better for standing up for my community than this.

The idea I formed getting up this morning is that you can hardly blame someone for the religion they were brought up in. I was brought up in a strictly Atheist home. So strict that it's fair enough to say it was absolutely Atheist.

I feel so much hate from religious people, but I can't blame them for their upbringing. There is just a divide that can never be crossed.

I do have some sort of religion. It's improvised. Solitary. Zen is the best label for it.

So, I'm sorry you were raised in a religion. It must suck to be you. I mean that 100%. It feels like that is what religious people are saying to me. Is that a war?

There is no choice in the matter. It's a bridge that can't be crossed. A divide. You can't change your childhood upbringing.

It's the AA thing in the 12x12 in the second half of Tradition 3: "When you wrote all that stuff, did you mean it?"

I'm not even an Atheist "thumper". I just want to coexist. My work is not accepted, so I'm massively poor and having to deal with Christian handout hate. I'm an artist and engineer. Professionally. Every job opportunity is an insult and a harassing episode.

I'm coding a QIX clone right now and having a blast! Gotta keep those skills sharp. I was singing and playing Peter Gabriel's Down to Earth from the credits in the WALL-E movie yesterday (I mostly ignore the content of the lyrics). I wrote a list of 73 songs that I know fairly well that I can play and sing on multiple instruments. I made $150,000 playing trombone and you can't play and sing trombone at the same time and it uses no fingers. So I'm pretty amazing like that.

But I'm an atheist and kind of old. And massively tortured. I will not play in a group.

Am I good enough? Do you have to kill me because I am an atheist? Is coexisting good enough? Is it a crime to not love my neighbor? Is it a crime to not like sports? Is it a crime to not be a parent?

I'll close this out. I went to bed with some internet research on the difference between parents and non parents and it looked like there are some good articles to read there. One big difference that I've realized is that parents likely have some sense of rooting for their child. I don't have anything like that nor do I desire to.

Please have some compassion for diversity.
